Network & Collaborations

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Our growing network brings together researchers, practitioners, and communities from across the University, creating space for bold ideas, shared learning, and impactful partnerships.

Network & Collaborations

Collaborations

AI@Southampton works closely with groups across the University, in the region and nationally, whose research is advancing or applying artificial intelligence (AI).

Agents, Interaction and Complexity

Researching the science and engineering of complex systems, focusing on areas including human-machine teams and human-in-the-loop interaction.

Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence for Automated Investigations for Scientific Discovery (AI4SD)

AI4SD brings together Southampton researchers to demonstrate how cutting-edge artificial and augmented intelligence technologies can accelerate and transform scientific discovery. It is hosted by the University of Southampton and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

AI and Society Hub

The AI and Society Hub is one of four Public and Community Engagement Hubs or networks developed by the Public Engagement with Research unit that brings together the local voluntary, community and social enterprise sector with our staff, students and research strengthening partnerships and helping to establish Southampton as a leading city for AI innovation.

Big Data in Health

Uses AI algorithms and statistical methods to address real-world health challenges. By combining these approaches with extensive qualitative research, they provide deeper insights into how big data can be applied in medical and social contexts.

Centre for Health Technologies

Acts as a catalyst for new collaborations and partnerships between Southampton’s Electronics and Computer Science academics and health practitioners. Its work spans areas such as e-health, healthcare technologies, wellbeing and rehabilitation.

Centre for Democratic Futures

An interdisciplinary research hub bringing together a diverse group of academics from social sciences, humanities, physical and life sciences to explore AI and emerging technologies, and their impact on democracy and society.

Centre for Machine Intelligence

Brings together researchers focused on exploring on the fundamental underpinnings of AI, machine learning, autonomous systems, and web and internet science. Their work is already making a major impact on real-world challenges in areas such as disaster response, smart energy systems, precision healthcare, blocktrain technology and security.

Citizen-Centric AI Systems

Is advancing the fundamental science needed to design AI systems that are trustworthy and reliable for citizens. It is a UK Research and Innovation Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship.

Digital Health and Biomedical Engineering

A group of engineers and computer scientists who are developing new approaches for preventing, diagnosing and managing health conditions. Their research spans AI, data science, digital health and medical technology.

Law and Technology Centre

Brings together leading scholars at the intersection of law and technology to explore and influence the wider debate on the legal implications of technological developments.

MINDS CDT

A Centre for Doctoral Training in Machine Intelligence for Nano-Electronic Devices and Systems

RAi UK

Brings together leading experts to establish an international research and innovation institute dedicated to creating trustworthy, secure AI that benefit people and society.

SustAI CDT

A multidisciplinary and inclusive PhD programme that equips students with cutting-edge AI skills while fostering a deep understanding about how these technologies can be applied to pressing environmental challenges.

Vision, Learning and Control

Explores the theory behind key technological areas, including control, machine learning and computer vision.

Web and Internet Science

The group researches large-scale systems that combine computational, data and human components.

Southampton is a proud member of the Turing University Network that provides opportunities to engage and collaborate both with The Alan Turing Institute and its wider community of researchers, business and policymakers.

The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. Named after Alan Turing whose pioneering work laid the foundations of modern computing, data science and AI, the Turing brings together leading expertise from across the UK and beyond. Southampton has been a Turing University Partner since 2018.

With internationally recognised expertise in AI and data science, Southampton undertakes research that addresses some of the world’s most pressing scientific, societal and economic challenges. We apply this research to real-world problems, helping to position the UK as a global leader in AI and data science research, collaboration and innovation.

How Southampton engages with the Turing:

Turing Fellows

We have a number of current and former Turing Fellows who are distinguished scholars in AI, data science and related fields who drive collaborative projects, contribute to new ideas, secure external funding and provide research expertise.

Early Career Colleague (ECC) Network

A thriving network hosting regular events for early career researchers working with AI and data science to share ideas and explore Turing collaborations.

Enrichment Scheme

Offers PhD students the chance to enhance their current research by accessing Turing facilities and opportunities.

Theory and Method Challenge Fortnights

Intensive two-week collaborations bringing together experts from the Turing University Partner Network and international institutions to address core challenges in AI and data science.

Data Study Groups

Providing opportunities to collaborate with top talent from industry, academia and government to brainstorm and analyse real-world data science challenges.

Interest Groups

Forums for researchers interested in AI and data science to share ideas, exchange knowledge, and communicate emerging scientific concepts to the wide Turing and beyond.

Internship Network

Links UK doctoral students who are studying an AI or data science topic to internship projects in industry.

Research Programmes

Significant programmes of strategic research led by programme directors, with involvement from industry, the public sector or third sector partners.
